Winter Anime 2014 Genius Compendium

The Winter Anime Season Has Arrived. This Pretty Much Means Me Ranking A Ton Of New Anime And Pretty Much Being Dead Wrong By The Time February Rolls Around. Let's Get This Started!

Now, for those of you who don't know how my Compendiums work, it's simple: I only rank all of the new TV anime that's making their debut this Winter. No Sequels (*looks at Silver Spoon and Chuu2Koi2*). No already existing franchises, or I guess long running franchises (*Looks at Saki, Seitokai Yakuindomo*). No Shorts (*looks at Pupipo, Strange +*). And of course, no films or OVAs. It just makes everything easy for me/I get to shine all the new faces in anime. For better or for worse. So, you get how things work? Then I better get started!

Galilei Donna

No review of a noitaminA series is complete without a discussion about the perceived declining quality in its programming in recent years, is it? Starting with Fractale, there have been more and more series on the timeslot that have not only been mediocre or uninspired, but even outright terrible! Black Rock Shooter and Guilty Crown are easily the worst offenders, but there's been plenty that justdon't feel like noitaminA series? Not in the way series during the 'classic' era of noitaminA were, at any rate. Psycho-Pass, Robotics;Notes and Silver Spoon are some notable recent examples of shows that, frankly, could have been on any timeslot regardless of how good they may have been; there was nothing that made them feel like a noitaminA show. The most recent season that fits the bill would probably be spring 2012, with the fantastic double whammy of Tsuritama and Kids on the Slope.

2013 in particular had been a pretty concerning year for the previously esteemed timeslot - the winter season was just the second halves of autumn season shows, spring was dedicated to a Katanagatari reairing of all things, and summer only had Silver Spoon (as excellent as it was). But the autumn season inspired some hope that maybe things could change - two completely original series, with imaginative premises and some interesting promo art. One of which was Galilei Donna, a story about the three Ferrari sisters, who are all descendants of Galileo Galilei and end up on international wanted lists quite early on.

Winter 2014 Anime Preview

Hey all, it's season preview time again - doesn't time fly!?Anyway this upcoming Winter season is surprisingly decent looking, which is a good thing since it's cold and I don't want to go outside. These days it feels like the quality shows are being more evenly spread out over the year, rather than being clustered into the Spring & Autumn seasons - those seasons are still bigger, but Summer & Winter are definitely much more packed now than they were in the past.Hopefully the trend continues!

Right on to the preview then~!

Status Update: December

So I felt it was time for another post, this time a bit more of an update than a review or something like that. First things first: It's closing in on Christmas pretty quick! I've been busy trying to figure out what to give as presents, because I'm really bad at that. I guess I lack the creativity, as I've been asked myself what I want for Christmas only to disappoint with an answer like "I dunno". Anyway, Christmas is supposed to be a holiday to spend with your family, enjoy the best of the Christmas movies (I heartily recommend Die Hard, if you remain unconvinced here's) and eat great food. I might however not have that chance this year, due to work.

On the other hand, I've received some great news! I've gotten accepted into the language school for my one-year Japan trip, and now I only gotta wait for my Student Visa, along with other paperwork to be done. I am seriously excited to go to Japan. I'll probably end up taking a lot of pictures, maybe making a few videos as well, who knows. I'll toss them up on this blog and attempt to make some sort of regular schedule for them by then. Not promising anything on a regular schedule as of yet. Another thing I wanted to mention real quick, is the weather. Normally at this point in December, we'd have loads of snow in Norway, and freezing temperatures of around -5 to -10 degrees Celsius at least. So far we've had two snowfalls, both being washed away by rain the days after with the warm weather. Today it's 5 degrees Celsius. I went out with a T-shirt and an open college-jacket today and still felt warm.

2013 Anime

Another winter, another end of year Top 12 list~ Starting as ever with the anime opening themes that have entertained me the most, both at the start of the episodes themselves, and often as songs in their own right in my music library. :D Links to the OP videos will be in the titles, at least until Youtube takes them down or mutes them.

Ga-Rei Zero isn't a 2013 anime, but I liked the pic. And I do still play the OP a lot.12:

The Beginning (and End) of A Legend; Tsuiokuhen.

I took the liberty of watching Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen, or more commonly known as Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, the other day. I was expecting a good hour and a half of backstory to a series that has shaped my perception of shonen themes, a couple of battle scenes, good ol' pumped up action, and awful 90 s dubbing.

I did not get what I expected.

Fall 2013 First Impressions: NoitaminA Returns

It's been a pretty dead year for the noitaminA block this year. The winter saw two carry-overs from 2012. Spring was a rerun of Katanagatari. It wasn't until summer's charming Silver Spoon adaptation that we started to get anything new, but even then we had an Ano Hana rerun alongside it. Things are finally back into full swing this season, though, with two anime-original works.

Great Anime

I realized yesterday that its been a while since I've seen really good anime.Kamisama no inai nichiyoubi was pretty good, but it wasn't epic the way I had hoped.Shingeki no kyoujin is.But the problem is, as good as the plot may be, I discovered the manga first, and so I knew what was going to happen the whole season. The animation and framing is enjoyable though.Last year katanagatari, anohana were the best ones I saw that I can remember off the top of my head. But a lot of what I watch isnt that memorable.Watching new anime as it comes out is directly exploring, which is good.I watch the raws for those, so I get japanese practice out of it regardless. But there are 25~ series at least, every season. Some of them are continuations, but the rest are new.Ive watched and dumped quite a few this month already. As time passes, it gets easier to tell which ones were good and which ones weren't worth watching. To a point.Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann scored a 7.8 on one sight, but I thought it was a 9.There are anime that fill certain slots in an otaku's life.My generation had the sailor moon thing, now its precure, maybe?.hack is now SAO.You watch one, and any after it seem the same, because you saw that one first. This is usually where ratings and my impressions dont match up. That 3 episode rule, sometimes its good, but I believe that in the first episode, you can get a feel for the whole thing.Madoka Magica doesnt go all dark until the third episode, but in the first one someones trying to kill off the mascot, and the feeling is already there.Samurai Champloo, 1 episode was enough. Some, the first episode is the best one.Ga Rei Zero had an awesome first one.The series was pretty good, but the beginning tops the whole season.I wish I didnt know what was going to happen when I watched it though.Thats the other thing.I have a sort of neurosis about which way I experience a series, because once you know the plot, theres no going back.Watch a crappy anime, and when you switch to the manga it makes it harder to read sometimes.Though, if you insist on watching the junk one, do it first.Like, dragon ball legends, that live action, probably isnt as bad if you dont know what dragon ball is.

Katanagatari (serie+pics)

This show was really good. Each episode has 48 minutes so is like watching two episodes in one. The whole series has 12 episodes, so you can see it in like 10 hours. At first I wasn't so into, this kind of animation, but that has happen to me before so I have learn not to judge anime by that.

It has some outstanding fights, and animation. the story is well told. Characters are likable and in short a great way to pass some time. It s has some original points that I will hold dear for the rest of my life, Cheriooo!!!! hahaha

Autumn 2013 Anime Preview

I'm back bitches~!I have been back in the warm embrace of my PC & wonderful internet connection for three weeks now - it's been a strange experience. For a start Ireland feels bloody tiny, but the crap public transport means that I am sorely missing not having a car.I am pretty much bankrupt thanks to my trip (which was loads of fun) so had a frantic first week home of job searching.Thankfully I got a temporary 2 month contract to tide me over for a while .which meant very little time being a NEET and catching up on things.

Being the obsessive fan I am, I did manage to keep up with a choice selection of shows from the seasons I was AWOL, but still have a lengthy list of things I want to check out - will get round to them eventually. But anyhoo, you're here for the Autumn Preview, so lets get cracking! (Can't tell you how much I missed doing these things - exhausting, but satisfying~!)

Lemme See Your Narrative: Imagery, Aesthetic, Beliefs

One aspect I think makes my anime blog distinct from most is that I'm so vocal about my values, so open about their level of influence on my choices, so actively hyperfocused on figuring out what I think about something and why that it can seem I kill any desire I have to negotiate those terms. And from time to time, this makes my tastes seem more schizophrenic than they actually are.

For example: I genuinely dislike NisiOisin's work. I don't think he takes genius, sexual and social perversion very seriously at all, for all his thematic obsession with them. I readily understand the veneer effect of seeing text and repetitious scene splayed all over the screen, the cocky jauntiness, the constant feeling that things are happening, even if one can't understand them. I can appreciate some of the questions he asks, like maybe in Zaregoto (maybe), or a bit of Katanagatari. I don't think he really wants to take a hard, careful look at and through a construction of what is named "shittiness" and figure out thoroughly, meticulously, how it is that values, destructive or affirming, are constructed. Ergo, I find his--as opposed to Shaft's--stuff morally unhelpful and menially entertaining. The single (and I mean single) reason I haven't closed the book entirely on his work is because light novel translatoractively appreciates him.

KOUMAJOU DENSETSU II

Koumajou Densetsu II - Yougen no Chingonka (English: Legend of Scarlet Devil Castle II - Stranger's Requiem) is the direct sequel to (Comiket 76), a castlevania based game developed and published by Frontier Aja which was released at Comiket 79, on December 30, 2010. The game features fine artworks drawn by famous mangaka and illustrator Akira Banpai who previously included a fair portion of both Vocaloid and Touhou subjects.

One of the best game features is the support of professional seiyuu (voice actors) such: Miyuki Sawashiro (Saeko Busujima, High School of the Dead), Haruka Tomatsu (Princess Hitei, Katanagatari), Rina Sato (Mikoto Misaka, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun) etc. The BGM's probably is not much as the original game, but adds perfect atmosphere. During Winter Comiket 81 (2011) Frontier Aja released Koumajou Densetsu Premium Pack. A fully updated re-release of two games in one package with additional artworks and abridged version of the soundtracks.

My Favoite 30 Anime of All Time

So I was skimming a few anime blogs and decided to read their favorite 10, or 20, or 30 anime series of all time. I got to thinking about what I would consider my top however many anime series. So I decided to make a list. I am making some rules to this list. It has to be on my completed list on myanimelist.com. You can find my list here, . I will also include any series that I want on the favorites list that are more than 50 episodes and still running. I will also exclude movies and live action stuff. So here it is, my top 30 favorite anime of all time, until something better comes along. Note: much of this list will probably change depending on how I am feeling from day to day. Many series could easily just swap places with one another. Also there will probably be spoilers. But enough of that, onto the list!

30. Shrine of the Morning Mist: I first saw this series when I watched anime OnDemand. And it was weird. Magical shrine girls fighting against an age old curse to save the main heroines crush, who is also her cousin. And I think their grandmother is an immortal cat. But when I looked past the weirdness I saw surprisingly fun characters that grew with the series, and it was also just funny. For like a third of the series the girls think that the love interest is actually having a torrid affair with another male classmate, and the way they go about it is honestly funny. And the villains are so sympathetic, I think they became some of my favorite characters in the series. It is a bit of a guilty pleasure, as the incest romance makes thing awkward at the best of times, but still, it has its high moments and just makes me smile.

Animation Talk: Anime Recommendation 3

Yes, another list of anime that I can recommend for some reason or another. Not all of these might suit your tastes, but in my description I will give my reasons why you should watch these and if those aren't enough for you, then it might not be for you (although it doesn't hurt to check out the first episode at least).

1. Beelzebub (60 episodes)

Thoughts and Predictions On the Animusic Tournament

The first round of the has just begun - go vote if you haven't already -and already, I can feel the disappointment starting to pile up. Intellectually, I know only one song can win in the end and I am excited to see how the matches play out but it's hard to watch favorite songs, or even just well-liked songs, not do as well as one feels they should. Before moving onto my predictions I wanted to highlight these already fallen songs.

I really don't have room to complain - and that's why I'm not - over the number of songs that made it into the tournament from my nomination ballot. If we look at my ballot to see how they ranked

So some site on the interwebs decided to make the Top 20 anime of 2010s

I couldn't contain myself, I'm on f*cking vacation and I see this . Besides the point that we have not completed the decade some websitedecided that it should ask viewers what the best (or best to represent depending on translation) 20 anime of the decade has been. And to put it bluntly the list is absolute shit and here it is...

1. K-ON!!- Boring as hell

2. A Certain Scientific Railgun- A fun series but not a top twenty

Galilei Barrasters: Yasuomi UMETSU Returns

WHAT'S THAT? WIZARDS THAT MAKE COFFEE? I'M IN!

Above is a 45 second teaser for WIZARD BARRISTERS: VALVE MAGICIAN CECIL / , which will be the director's second original project since the rather disappointing KITE LIBERATOR from 2008. All of the director's trademarks - unique and somewhat doll-like character designs, completely over the top action, cute incidental characters and a flash of nudity (hardcore or otherwise) - are in full force, and it leaves me absolutely thrilled to see Umetsu doing something that... y'know, isn't the last 20 minutes of that Dante's Inferno game tie-in trainwreck project. It's set for a 2014 release, and if this trailer is even remotely true - an action packed courtroom drama about magical shenanigans?! -I couldn't be more excited.

Silver Spoon

I'm back from London. It was really big, but also great. And Kero, Sachin and Smurph: you were awesome. It really was great to meet you!

And now I have the daunting task to catch up to everything again. Starting off: Silver Spoon, the latest Noitamina-series. Thank god, afte the past spring season had that Katanagatari-rerun. Next autumn there will be two new original series and a second Psycho Pass season has been announced, so the timeslot will be back in its glory again.

A Rudimentary Breakdown of the "Realist" Iyashikei Series: Or, Why Usagi Drop Didn't Tickle One Lolicon's Fancy

First, kudos to rebeccableich's (hence referred to by me as RB) on why the anime series Usagi Drop didn't connect with her, even though she enjoyed it; before you read mine, I recommend that you read hers. In it, she summarizes the premise of the series, provides unflinching commentary, and ties in her own childhood-familial experiences.

At the risk of perverting it, I'll elaborate her process--perhaps take it too far. She tests the elements of premise against her own experiences. The realization is that she has nothing to latch on to: Rin is too ideal, RB herself grew up in a nuclear family, babysat children and was a child quite unlike Rin, around whom the story tension revolves (it's because of her that Daikichi's actions are shifted and limited). It's eerily obvious that the show was not written "for RB" or even "with people like her in mind" (note my quotation marks). The desired audience seems more aligned with the romantic POV of the middle-aged--like parents, for example. There's a definite, but ultimately only shrug-worthy, alienation. Who's telling the story, then? And who's supposed to care?

What is this... Favorite Anime? REVISITED

Back in October 2011, . At the time, I had a somewhat limited watch history and, to be honest, I hadn't quite thought some of them through. I figure it's about time I fix that. This time around I'm going to do it by genre instead of just naming a bunch of the same genre and copping out on the others. Variety is the spice of life, you know?

THE REQUIREMENTS: According to my friends, I have some very high standards when it comes to animated shows, and I can't really dispute that. I do have high standards for shows because I've seen so many incredible shows and can't tolerate anything less. Most of these will meet every requirement, but some might not. Some are non-negotiable, like a decent story and likable characters, while others, like animation and music, are important but won't completely ruin an anime if they aren't superb. "Graphics aren't everything" we gamers like to say...

Katanagatari

Anime Music Tournament Picks

The folks over at Anime Instrumentality are bringing together a contest pitting the great anime songs of all times against each other. You can see more details on the project's main site - .

The more the merrier, I say, so I thought I would use this opportunity to post my nomination picks and discuss some of my favorite anime OPs, EDs and inserts. With the theme of the tournament in mind, I paid little attention to the visual side of things this time around. That said, the reasons each song got on the list are still quite varied, as you will no doubt see below.

AFA12 Signature Acquisitions

Yup, 'signature' as in 'autograph', not 'outstanding'.

I'm unequivocally late in posting these, but as the adage goes, "It's better late than never!". So, here are some of the signatures that I was fortunate enough to acquire at last year's Anime Festival Asia 2012.

At Least I Update It Now XD

Lately I was busy with my national exam, so I don't have so much time for updating my own blog. Sorry for that. My score was not really good, but not that bad. Well I still can get some good school XD

I have so much things that I want to do. So much good anime this season like Shingeki no Kyojin, Suisei no Gargantia, Hataraku Maou-sama and others. I can't write all of it ahaha I was feel so lucky well don't know why. But I got dissapointed for Devil Survivor 2. I thought it was great, some of my friend say that too. Later, the story getting worse and boring. I never play the game, so I don't know if the story will get better on future... or maybe it's just me? I don't know, don't be offended okay? It's still good to watch. ^^v

Last month I was searching for some good old anime, and I found Madoka Magica. When I saw it for the first time, I was thinking that Madoka is just like another mahou shoujo series like PreCure or Sailor Moon. Now I know I was really really wrong. Madoka Magica is just epic ! If you haven't watch it, then you should..no, you MUST !

Katanagatari -The Story of Swords-

EPIC ! I don't know another words to describe it, just epic.... Really good story, and it's my first time to watch such anime that have a narator inside it lol. Although the duration is so long (about 50 minutes, almost 1 hour XD so be patient when watching this series), it's worth watching it. They have great soundtracks too. No regret.

The story itself was telling about Togame, who was searching for a new right hand after betrayals to her from her excrews for her mission, searching 12 legendary swords. She sails the sea and arrive on a liveless island. Nobody live there except two brother and sister, Shichika Yasuri and Nanami Yasuri. Both are the daughter and son of hero from past that has been deported into the island. And then something happen and blah blah blah, I don't want to spoil it XP

I know it's too late for write an article about this anime, but I will do what I like, ahaha forget it swt.

Remember to Get Your Nominations in for the Animusic Tourney and, Incidentally, Here are my Picks to Help Jog Your Memory

Since those reading this are probably already aware of the impending start of the , I'm writing only to remind people that the time to nominate their favorite OP/ED/insert songs is fast running out.

To help those that haven't filled out their nominations yet let me help you with a look at the 15 songs I nominated after an exhaustive search through my anime music collection.:)
