The world of Flonyard is in upheaval. The nations of Biscotti and Galette are at war, a decidedly one-sided one if Biscotti's impressive run of miserable losses is anything to go by. Down to her last stronghold, Princess Millhiore of Biscotti decides desperate measures are called for and summons a Hero-with-a-capital-H. Enter Shinku, an acrobatics-loving middle-school student from Japan. While exiting school in his customary manner—by jumping from the roof—he falls into a magical vortex and ends up taking the meteor express to Flonyard. After meeting Millhiore and learning that Flonyard wars are basically athletics competitions, Shinku gladly accepts the mantle of Hero and enters the fray against Leonmitchelli, the powerful lady leader of Galette.

And that is more than anyone will take away from Dog Days. It is so determined to be harmless that it bleaches itself of all flavor, leaving no impression, good or bad, once it passes. The advantage of that is that it's harmless. The characters are uniformly nice, the visuals cute and basically fan-service-less, and the plot a blend of tried-and-true clichés as smooth and easily digestible as cream of wheat. Shinku and Millhiore's relationship is pure puppy love—appropriately enough, given that Flonyardians are all dog-people, complete with little tails and adorable floppy ears—and even the wars are more American Gladiators than Gladiator. The downside is that the show is completely devoid of entertainment value. Comatose patients have more fun in their vegetative states than you'll have watching Dog Days. If you must have your hero-is-summoned-from-Earth-to-save-alternate-world anime watch The Familiar of Zero, or better yet, The Twelve Kingdoms. Or Fushigi Yûgi, or... well, you get the idea.

It would be even more fun if this weren't such an ugly-looking production. The animation is a mixed bag, with plenty of fully-animated action sequences and just as many barely-animated ones, but the design work is terrible. Character designer Shukou Murase, of Gasaraki and Gundam Wing fame, takes his penchant for drawing characters without noses to an extreme, and Argentosoma's players look less like humans and more like some species of alien themselves. The creature known as Frank, or EX-01, resembles nothing so much as a big heap of random geometric shapes. This wouldn't be so bad except the audience is obviously supposed to identify with the creature's feelings, and his lack of a face or anything like one makes it difficult. FUNERAL's requisite transforming fighter planes/robots, known as SARGs, are pretty cool, but the aliens they're sent to fight look straight out of Ultraman. That's probably intentional, but the rest of the show takes itself so seriously that these hokey aliens look decidedly out of place. This is one of the most visually unappealing series this reviewer has ever seen. It's nowhere near as crucial an element as story or character, but a more sensible artistic style would have made an already good show even better.

The music is wanting as well. Every time there is a dramatic moment or revelation it is accompanied by a ridiculous series of notes that sound like they're being played on a Casio keyboard from 1985. But that's not half as bad as the laughable closing theme: a bouncy, upbeat number that is totally at odds with the series' overriding dark tone. This cheery song about space exploration plays as the credits roll over a picture of a cheesily-grinning astronaut, and it cracks me up every time I see it.

No complaints are to be had with either of the show's vocal casts. Familiar Japanese seiyuu such as Jouji Nakata and Houko Kuwashima are matched in English by talents like Beau Billingslea and Crispin Freeman. Bandai continues to be one of the front-runners in bringing high standards to English dubbing and making sure that every anime they put out sounds just as professional in English as it does in Japanese. Both casts are obviously having a lot of fun with this material, as the scripts' smart character building allows for lots of dramatic opportunities.

This is also another class-act DVD release from Bandai. While not packed with bells and whistles, this disc is five episodes of top-picture-quality entertainment, barring some slight screen jitter in the last episode. A credit-free version of the opening is included (too bad a clean version of the closing theme isn't here as well, I wanted to laugh at that grinning guy again), as is a tech file detailing the design of the SARGs. Presumably future volumes with include data on other vehicles and characters featured in the series.

Argentosoma has arrived suddenly and with little fanfare, but it is a pleasant surprise. Its obtuse design work does not disguise the craftsmanship that went into its conception and realization. With a fine cast of characters and some canny script writing, Sunrise takes the same old formula and makes it feel new again.

Eureka 7 relies on a mix of throbbing techno beats and soaring, dramatic musical numbers to back its action scenes, while background music during the day-to-day affairs on the Gekko is often more playful. The effectiveness of its use varies. The opening theme “Days,” which is incongruous with its visuals, sound like something adopted from a late '70s/early '80s American TV series, while the string-backed closer is a more modern-sounding adult contemporary number.

The Bang Zoom!-produced English dub is a solid one overall, with most of the English cast members being particularly well-chosen for their roles. Although Stephanie Sheh is known more for her ADR script writing, a closer English vocal match to the seiyuu for Eureka could not be imagined, and Crispin Freeman feels like an excellent fit as Holland. The script also stays reasonably close to the original, and the original Japanese pronunciation of Eureka's name is retained rather than switching to the way it should be pronounced in English (“ur-eh-ka” vs. “yer-ee-ka”). The one problem spot is Johnny Yong Bosch's key performance as Renton, which unfortunately is a big problem since he has close to half the lines in this volume. Although Mr. Bosch has the tone, attitude, and delivery of the character down, he's straining too hard to pitch his voice right to match a performance originally done by a woman, which results in a whiny sound that may grate on the nerves. His performance would have been more palatable if he'd just given up on the pitch and let Renton sound a bit older. He's the sole reason I'm marking down the dub grade, though, so if you can tolerate him then you should find the dub to be a quite satisfying one.

Much to his chagrin, second-year high school student Ryuji Takasu inherited exactly one thing from his dearly departed yakuza father: a face which can effortlessly intimidate almost anyone. Taiga Aisaka is a tiny, ultra-petite-built classmate so fierce in disposition that she has earned the nickname “Palmtop Tiger.” Though their first encounter ends violently, a misplaced love letter and the discovery that they are neighbors lead Ryuji and Taiga to an eventual understanding: since they both pine for the best friend of the other, they will assist each other in their romantic endeavors. The trouble is that Taiga has already previously turned down Ryuji's friend Yusaku Kitamura (a decision she came to regret), Taiga's friend Minori “Minorin” Kushieda is a major league freakazoid who has yet to discover love, and people keep misunderstanding that Ryuji is, as Taiga puts it, only her “dog” and not her boyfriend. Further complications arise when Ami Kawashima, a magazine model who uses an airheaded façade to cover up her true nature, transfers into their classroom and eventually starts coming on to Ryuji while also forming a combative relationship with Taiga. Deeper issues linger under the surface, too, including Ami's problems with a stalker and Taiga's strained relationship with her divorced parents, the latter of which comes to a head during a cultural festival. According to legend, though, only a dragon is mighty enough to stand beside a tiger, and Ryuji has resolved to be that dragon.

First the bad news: the first half of this 2008-2009 series does just about everything a typical anime romantic comedy does. It has its beach episode, its pool episodes, its cultural festival arc, its Test of Courage, its assorted shenanigans involving characters who are desperately in love with other characters but can't work up the courage to confess, its transfer student who tries to shake up the romantic arrangements, and its couple who fails to acknowledge (though most viewers quickly will) that they are most right for each other even though they think they are in love with others. The good news is that Toradora! does all of these far better than the run-of-the-mill romantic comedy and adds in two things that most such series could only aspire to have: quality writing and genuine depth. Those factors go a long way towards making this one of the best series of its type and contribute towards making this one of the best series of any type to be officially released in the U.S. in 2010.

And the key here is the writing. Episodes 1-13 are based fairly closely on the originating series of light novels by Yuyuko Takemiya, but whether the credit belongs to Takemiya or anime producer J.C. Staff, a wonderful effort has been turned in here which takes ordinary elements and does extraordinary things with them. Even in its most mundane scenes the first half of the series never quite feels typical; there is always something which gives it just a little more edge, a little more depth, a little more impact, and with that comes at least a little more entertainment value. The series can be quite funny at times – Minorin's reaction to being asked what she thinks of someone who pretends to be an airhead is an all-time classic, for instance – but the humor often takes a back seat to the more dramatic content, and as the first half wears on the series shades more towards a dramedy than a true romantic comedy. Its dramatic side can pack some power, too, delivering some scenes which can be emotional, others which are uncomfortable, and other still which can take the viewer aback with their unexpected intensity. Even so, the writing still finds a good balance and transitions effortlessly between them without going ridiculously overboard in either direction, as so many series do. It also demonstrates that an anime does not have to be blunt to get its points across; nuance and subtlety are in greater abundance here than in most other series of its type.

No series like this can excel without a strong cast of characters, and in that the series is blessed. To be sure, the lead characters aren't entirely original; deceptively tough-faced characters are not unheard-of in the genre (see Kenta Usui's intimidating eyes in Karin), but also casting Ryuji in the “domestic goddess” archetype is a fresher twist and makes his cleaning fetish all the more amusing. Taiga, meanwhile, so thoroughly epitomizes what it means to be a tsundere character in anime that she even beat out characters from hard-core moefests like K-ON! to win a major Japanese moe character tournament in 2009; the sole scene in this set where she genuinely smiles, which comes near the end of episode 13, should leave little doubt why. She has exactly the right mix of outward fierceness and inward emotional vulnerability to endear herself to viewers. Ami, with initially her two-faced nature, more subtle personality quirks (what does her favorite spot say about her?), and gradual growth towards being “real,” shines as the most original character amongst the three major supporting roles, while Minorin is deliciously overboard as the almost impossibly weird character – but underestimate her capacity for emotional range and she'll surprise you. Kitamura, by comparison, is more laid-back, congenial, and even-tempered, but does contribute to one of the set's best comedy scenes. Amongst minor supporting characters, the little-used student council president Yumire Sano sticks out as an entertainingly brusque character (thankfully we see plenty more of her in the second half), while timid homeroom teacher Yuri's laments about approaching 30 without being married make for some amusing but thankfully not overused side jokes. Contrarily, Ryuji's mother Yasuko is more of a nuisance so far with her airheaded behavior, but the apoplectic parrot Inko-chan makes up for that.

The most distinctive visual aspect of the series is its character designs. The emphasis on sharp chins will certainly remind viewers of the more recent Highschool of the Dead, with which Toradora! shares its character designer, but this one, unlike HSotD, is very restrained in what little use it makes of fan service and entirely uses more natural proportions for its female characters; Taiga is, in fact, famously flat-chested, which does become a plot point in one arc but with unexpected complications. Amongst male characters, Ryuji stands out with his gangster-like features, while on the opposite side of the spectrum Kitamura stands out just as much for his warm and inviting expression and handsome features. Ami does look distinctly prettier than any other female character, and the series does look good in general, but it is not one that will be remembered for its aesthetics. In fact, the most impressive visual aspect of the series is arguably the girls' school uniforms, which feature sharp red blazers, although several scenes (especially the race scene in episode 13) do also excel in animation.

The musical score does not impress much save for the way it segues into the closing theme, but the base material here is good enough that it doesn't need to do anything fancy, either. The music typically floats along merrily with its light electronic sounds, though it does show a great capacity for dramatic and comedic reinforcement when needed. Each episode opens with “Pre-Parade,” an electronic song wonderfully sung by the three most prominent female seiyuu and sporting both a catchy tune and fitting lyrics and visuals. Yui Horie, who does such a fabulous job voicing the offbeat Minorin, also closes each episode in this set with the equally catchy and fitting “Vanilla Salt.” Though no English dub is present, the Japanese dub does pack some other star power and quality performances, including Rie Kugimiya reasserting her position as the Queen of Tsundere with her performance as Taiga.

Toradora! is the inaugural American anime license and release for NIS America, a company originally established in the U.S. to distribute titles for Japanese parent company Nippon Ichi Software but which announced earlier this year that it was branching out into anime. The initial print run was thrown askew by a big problem with ghosting, though that seems to have been fixed for the most recent releases. Even so, the video quality does not seem exceptionally sharp, and in a very unusual (and somewhat annoying) set-up the two thinpacked DVDs boot directly into the first episode of each disk rather than to the disk's menu – and they do so with the subtitles turned off. Extras included on the second disk include clean opener and closer and two short omake titled “Toradora! SOS! Hurry for Gourmands” #1 and #2, which feature chibi versions of the main cast involved in various silly culinary discussions and taste tests. Also included in the Premium Edition is a long (7.5” by 10.5”) hardbacked Episode Guide, which provides a wealth of character designs, profiles, key terms, regularly-updated relationship charts, and various seiyuu and staff interviews, amongst other tidbits. It and the two thinpacked disks come in a sturdy box which sports some display-worthy cover art (someone needs to make a wall scroll of this!) but is wholly impractically sized for shelving amongst other anime DVDs and boxed sets. At least the translation and subtitles are solid, though the latter make the odd choice to use “warrior dieters” in a few places where “diet warriors” would have sounded better.

High school romantic comedies are such a crowded field in anime that series often have to resort to something outlandish to distinguish themselves from the crowd. Toradora! takes a less traditional approach by emphasizing drama and character development and allowing events to develop naturally from its characters rather than trying to force them into staid romcom formulas. The result is a quality series that is one of the rare gems in a field littered with rocks.

Artistry for the manga is handled by Sayaka Yamazaki, an up-and-comer who is probably not yet known by American fans but will certainly attract some new attention between this project and her upcoming manga Haruka 17. Her well-defined drawings provide good detail and distinctive, realistically-proportioned character designs which capture both the beauty and the very ordinary in the story's characters. Not shading in Nanase's normally-dark hair is used to mark instances where her telepathy kicks in, an interesting and effective visual trick. Fan service is also appealingly-done, with a few bits of nudity in later chapters and numerous scenes of Nanase in undergarments in the first two chapters. The one negative on the artistic front is the way Ms. Yamazaki draws eyes. These are uniformly normal-sized eyes, but the way that they're drawn – whether it's because they're just a little too far apart or the way that they're shaped – doesn't sit quite right in many scenes. On a few occasions tricks with the eye designs are used quite effectively to highlight a panel or two, but on the whole eyes of the characters (Most especially Nanase) are disconcerting.

Plot Summary: Kuroba Kaito loves to do magic, and he is a good performer. At high school, his childhood friend/girl friend tries to keep the boy inline. Of course Nakamori Aoko isn't gentle with the boy she'd never admit to loving. One morning, the classroom is filled with the talk about "Kaitou Kid," a jewerly thief who uses magic in his robberies. Kaito isn't impressed with this so called legend that reappeared after eight years, and says he could easily take the thief magic to magic. At home, thinking about his dead father who was also a magician, Kaito stumbles upon a hidden doorway in his room. He discovers his father was the original Kaitou Kid. But since he is dead, he wonders who the supposed Kaitou Kid from recent robberies is. Kaito puts on his father's hat and cape, becomes Kaitou Kid to search out the imposter.

For all the seeming imbalance of it—with every resource it has being channeled into its action, often while badly neglecting less violent aspects—the series comes together strangely well. No matter how many pointless off-branches it follows, the series is always building to a new match; just when it seems to be flailing in place, some silly, fillerific plot twist will prove to be the onset of a skull-cracking match. Nishio blends humor and violence with a verve and skill seldom seen outside of the very best of One Piece, and with a hard, ruthless edge even more seldom seen. But never so ruthless that the action stops being slam-bang fun. You can thank both the off-the-wall humor and the strange mix of bloody violence and cartoony characters—with their half-moon eyes and hugely exaggerated expressions—for that. And all of those random meetings, dangling side-plots and rivalries that go nowhere? They do a remarkable job preventing you from guessing who will fight who. Plus they're an endless mine of goofy humor. Even the lopsided budget begins to make a strange kind of sense after a while: Like Maki, Air Master is only truly alive when it's fighting.

The anime studio Production I.G confirmed on Tuesday that it is producing a film called Momo e no Tegami (A Letter to Momo) for a theatrical release in Japan in 2012. Jin-Roh director Hiroyuki Okiura spent seven years planning, writing, storyboarding, and directing the film; it is his first return to the proverbial director's chair since Jin-Roh in 2000.

"Dear Momo" — that was all that was written on a letter left behind by Momo's late father. Momo and her mother have just moved from Tokyo to the countryside of Japan's Inland Sea. On an island lies a wondrous town surrounded on all sides by quaint homes and nature's landscape. Even as Momo starts a new life, she wonders, "Father, what did you really want to write in your letter…?" One day, she discovers an ancient book in the attic, and from that day forward, strange happenings occur all around Momo.

And then the other shoe drops. A little math beforehand would tell you that something is wrong. A proposed three-disc release and a series with twelve thirteen-minute episodes...snag the calculator and, yes, that comes out to fifty minutes of content per disc. And sure enough, after fifty minutes the party's over. Unfortunately, the disc itself isn't. Rather than gracefully stiff consumers twenty bucks for less than an hour of entertainment, Media Blasters fills the remainder of the disc with four episodes of a so-called live-action series. It is, in fact, an extended extra during which voice actresses Momoko Saito (Tsuyuri) and Kimiko Koyama (Sora) write their own doujinshi. These episodes are obviously intended to fulfill the educational mission that the animated series shirks, and they do educate...while failing quite categorically to entertain. None of Doujin Work's irritations, be they the thoroughly unremarkable visuals, the background characters rendered as washed-out, featureless figures, or even the blatant horny-guy fantasy of cute girls drawing perverted fan comics, can come close to equaling the annoyance of having the series proper cut short by this phony, limply shot, boring live action interlude. This kind of thing is acceptable as an extra, but when it limits the actual content to a cruelly unsatisfying four half-episodes, it becomes a jarring betrayal of the not-unreasonable expectation that an anime release include an entire disc of anime. The result is one of the most unsatisfying volumes in recent memory (independent of content, that is)—fifty minutes of stupid-but-fun love followed by a fifty minute live-action bitch-slapping. Not a pleasant experience, no matter how pleasant the show itself is.

The extras that are labeled as such include only a clean version of the power-pop opening, which, despite being pretty nondescript itself, handily outshines the even more thoroughly nondescript score. There is no English language track.

Sasami: Magical Girls Club is an alternate universe spinoff of the Tenchi Muyo!, also known as No Need for Tenchi!, franchise, and apparently there is in fact No Need for Tenchi!—because he does not appear at all in the 13-episode first season! Instead, it is Sasami Iwakura and her quartet of adorable, youthful compatriots who take the center stage of this predictable yet inoffensive magical girl anime.

Given that this show is a spinoff of a spinoff (Sasami and her friends got their first starring roles in Magical Girl Pretty Sammy), you would be forgiven for thinking that the result would be an irony-laden monstrosity where all of the genre codes are delivered with postmodern scare quotes. This, however, would be a grievous misconception. But let's be clear first: Sasami: Magical Girls Club has an extremely limited list of new ideas to roll out and openly parodies magical girl/sentai mashups such as Sailor Moon once in awhile. Trotting out a list of all the things borrowed from other shows is a waste of time, but suffice it to say that if you have been around the block a few times, you will see plenty. If you haven't, you won't…and for newcomers to the genre or the medium, this is key: The creators seem to have reached the conclusion that irony is dead. And so: No panty shots whatsoever and only one pair of bouncing boobs (which make only brief cameo appearances). Yes, antisocial, potentially creepy male otaku are the intended audience in Japan, but it is so faithful to the magical girl genre that you should feel entirely safe allowing your six year old girl to watch it. And I lay odds she will be thrilled.

After several volumes of ups and downs, the unwritten conflict in Parasyte may be the struggle to balance quiet drama with fierce fighting action. Some of the finest points in the series have been Shinichi and Migi's one-on-one discussions about the nature of humankind. At the same time, however, some of the other finest points in the series involve human-creature hybrids tearing each other apart with crazy arm blades and other mutations. This volume finally hits the sweet spot, featuring a three-on-one brawl and a climactic shootout, but also reflecting on how deep a bond exists between mother and child. While there are many series that boast of being a thrilling sci-fi slugfest, it's a rare one that also manages to have a mind and a heart.

Volume 6 gets off to a slightly shaky start, dropping the reader in the middle of an ongoing story arc without much explanation (quick refresher: Shinichi is on the run from a monster that attacked him in the forest). At the same time, it tries to develop a storyline about Reiko and her gang hunting down the unassuming Detective Kuramori—a subplot loaded with violence and heartbreak, if only we cared about the detective himself. That seems to be an ongoing problem with the series: the side characters feel oddly distant, making it difficult to get invested in their side of the story. (An interlude involving Shinichi's girlfriend is particularly dull.) There is one shining moment in the first half, however—Reiko fighting against her minions when they all turn against her. Perhaps it's a tribute to the creativity of human thought, showing how she outwits her opponents by going beyond animal instinct. Or maybe it's just a good old blood-and-guts battle, a point that few would disagree with.

For all its graphic content and super-powered action, the core of Basilisk is its quality visuals, and that remains true through to the end. Gonzo sees no letdown here, finishing out the series with a volume that might be called beautiful if it wasn't so violent and blood-stained. All the thing the series has been praised for so far are still here: pleasing character designs, sharp use of color and color schemes, flashy effects, quality backgrounds, and animation that's smooth when it isn't using shortcuts. All-in-all, the look of the series has a richness to it that you just don't see in even most of the better-looking anime series. As with most previous volumes, the graphic content provides scenes which tantalize the viewer with the exposed flesh of its prettier female characters while going to almost absurd lengths to avoid showing actual nudity.

The opening and closing themes remain unchanged, although the final episode skips the prologue and adds on an epilogue. The soundtrack does its job well but does not especially stand out. The English VAs have mastered their roles by this point, providing a dub which satisfyingly portrays the emotions and pain of the characters without going overboard and hits the right tone in each case; Mark Stoddard and Stephanie Young prove to be particularly good fits as Tenzen and Kagero respectively, each closely mirroring the original performances. The English script, as always with FUNimation, is much more of an issue, as it goes as far as changing the meaning of some scenes in minor ways. If you can tolerate that, though, then you should find the dub for the final volume to be sufficient.

It has been difficult to resist the temptation to call Basilisk a ninja version of Romeo and Juliet, but regardless of how trite that may sound, the final volume proves indisputably that the series is a minor variation on the classic theme of star-crossed lovers who cannot find lasting peace with each other in life because of the burdens of family animosity. Japanese in setting and trappings it may be, and loaded with all sorts of super-powered (and non-super-powered) ninja action, but this is Shakespearean tragedy at its purest. For all its blood and gore – and those of you watching the series just for that will not be disappointed – the elegance of its genuinely emotional ending offers the strongest lasting impression. How the story gets there may offer some surprises, but it is the only ending the makes sense given the structure of the story and setting. If you're disappointed by it then you haven't been paying enough attention.

Five ninja remain at the beginning of the volume, but it wastes no time in getting down to business on killing one of its survivors. It then returns to its traditional Drag Mode as it sets up the final two non-Gennosuke/Oboro kills (come on, did you really think anyone but those two would be standing for the final confrontation?) over the next 2½ episodes. One can almost see the story being stretched out under the guise of further character development and careful pacing, and in truth the contents of these final four episodes probably could have been told in three. At least the writers did come up with an inventive and satisfying way to kill off Tenzen, who has to rate as one of the more despicable anime villains in recent memory, and kept everyone in character through to their ends. The ongoing presence of Lady Okufu serves as a reminder that, while these battles are between the Kouga and Iga clans, the ultimate stakes for those not directly involved are much greater indeed.

Within the first few minutes of the first episode it becomes apparent that a synopsis like the one above or on the back cover cannot do this series justice. The concept may sound like a blending of two common elements of sci-fi anime – the bad-ass action heroine with super-human abilities and an alien/human symbiosis – but in execution it becomes something wholly different. It does have its requisite share of action scenes, but they feel more like devices for moving the plot along than the focus of the series. This is, instead, a story much more about relationships, both between parent and child and between a matched pair of aliens who have integrated into human form.

To call Kurau a love story would not exactly be accurate, as the Kurau/Christmas dynamic does not have romantic overtones in the traditional sense. As another Agent spying on them notes at one point, though, neither do they have the “older/younger sister” familial relationship that Kurau claims to others. Theirs is a relationship rarely seen in anime: a deeply caring, achingly needy love, the kind which makes palpable Kurau's loneliness before Christmas appears and the joyful change to her attitude when Christmas finally does awaken and take human form. Given the way her adult personality is established in the latter half of the first episode, the change Kurau undergoes is dramatic and startling, but it so closely mirrors the kind of attitude adjustment some people undergo when they first become parents that it feels completely credible.

Though it fades into the background after the first episode, the father/daughter relationship involving Kurau is equally heartfelt. The depth of feeling Dr. Amami has for his daughter quickly becomes apparent in his devastation over what happens to Kurau and his trepidation over how much of the daughter he knows is actually present in the alien who has apparently blended with his daughter. Is his daughter's soul really a part of the Rynax, or is the Rynax merely a caretaker in Kurau's body? And how much does that actually matter? Difficult questions, to which the series provides no easy answers.

The only other recurring character who has been well-established by the end of the volume is Doug, a cop-turned-Agent who has his own parental issues. He has been hired to spy on Kurau and Christmas without knowing who and what they are, but who his employer is and why he has been hired to do this remains a mystery throughout this volume. Here the story takes a more ordinary turn, as all the early indicators suggest that he's a basically good guy who is going to wind up helping/working with Kurau and Christmas at some point (although that point does not come up in the first four episodes). Beyond him the characters introduced so far are your generic bunch of wild cards, thugs, unscrupulous corporate types, and severe, dedicated police-types.

Well-executed storytelling strikes a pleasing balance between character development and action scenes, which are dramatic and reasonably tense without being overly flashy. Rather than trying to be spectacular, the series places heavier emphasis on Kurau's more subtle use of her abilities and her commitment to keep her promise to her “father,” which involves keeping Kurau's body from being harmed. Because of that, none of the action scenes take on the overblown feel too often seen in such series. The best scenes are, in fact, the ones where Kurau is simply flying.

As good as the storytelling is, the excellent visuals are as much a part of the appeal. Good animation supports quality action scenes, while the pretty artistry further solidifies the position of BONES as one of Japan's top animation studios. Background, vehicle, and equipment designs favor a classic futuristic look and are invariably well-drawn. Despite a couple of tiny rough spots that always seem to creep into BONES productions, the character designs are equally outstanding. Kurau differs greatly from the typical anime heroine by maintaining her decidedly tomboyish look even in adulthood, while the darling Christmas is as much pretty as cute in her snappy purple-toned outfit. Characters in other key roles look equally good, although a slight drop-off in quality of rendering can be noticed in some lesser roles. Violence, though present in sufficient amount, usually gets intense rather than graphic, and not a bit of real fan service can be found; this is not a series that has any intention of selling itself on cuteness or visceral elements, but one who comes into the series expecting those may still be charmed by the level of quality in other elements.

That isn't to say that MeltyLancer is completely devoid of quality. It's an OVA series, animated by Gonzo on a very high budget, and the result is visually impressive. Despite the generally dull look of the show, the animation itself is fluid and very well done. The CG work isn't bad either; consider this show is pushing four years of age, and CG work has only improved in those four years. The DVD transfer is undeniably crisp and presented beautifully. Despite the generic production design, there is a considerable amount of eye candy to be had here, and if you're a fan of Gonzo, you may want to give this title a rent just to see them at their best when backed by a colossal budget. The dub is serviceable, but as with many dubs, it's hard to tell the females apart when they're speaking off-screen. You can't blame the voice actresses for that, since almost every anime female in every series is Around 17 to 25, and there are only so many voice styles to go around. The two younger females in the cast sound like the same obnoxiously high-pitched woman in her late 20's who's struggling to sound like a little girl is voicing them. It's nearly impossible to tell them apart.

One has to wonder what Ryoutaru Iwanaga, the manga-ka for the manga on which this anime is based, was thinking when he named this series. Did he just stick together two English words which sounded cool as a combination without understanding that they not only don't fit together, but sound positively silly?

And does anyone actually think it's a coincidence ADV is releasing the first volume of its anime version only a week before the most pumpkin-oriented date on the calendar?

Ragging on the name aside, the first volume reveals a good series only one small step from being a great one – and it leans in that direction with episode 4. Its penchant for heavy-handed moralizing about social status and responsibility and initial “problem of the week” format almost distract from a great central concept: a military unit which, guided by the indomitable spirit of one young woman, devotes itself to solving the problems left over by a massively destructive war. The way her spirit and idealism unwittingly provide both purpose and salvation to one of the greatest monsters left over from the war is only an extension of that, but an important one. Oland's realization that he can use what makes him a terror on the battlefield to help and protect people, instead of just defeat enemies, and the nature of his dreams early in episode 4 give the series a depth it might not otherwise have achieved, and its execution raises the quality of the content above the typical shonen gimmick of a bull-headed hero inspiring others through sheer determination.

The first three episodes present a series of apparent stand-alone scenarios while introducing the key characters and presenting issues not historically uncommon in the wake of wars: the delicate handling of forbidden chemical weapons, soldiers turned into bandits, a noble treating his subjects like playthings (Viscount Wolkins, despite appearing in only two episodes, is a prime contender for Complete Bastard of the Year), and a community disillusioned with military involvement in a civil project. What appears to be the long-term underlying plot starts in earnest with episode 4, although episode 2 actually leads directly into it. Over the course of the volume the content gradually succeeds at playing up the horror aspect of what Oland can do, which makes the action more intense and compelling than it might otherwise be; you might not think that a man staring down a tank while armed with a 13 mm hand gun would be that intimidating, but through a great combination of appropriate music, visuals, and writing the series makes it work. Balancing such scenes are the infrequent light-hearted moments, which come up most prominently in episode 2.

Witchblade represents a curious aberration in anime history. It takes its name, concept, and inspiration from an American comic book, but rather than just remake the same basic premise Gonzo advances the timeline 30 years and tells an entirely original story featuring a previously-unknown wielder – and to top it off, the story is considered canon by Top Cow Enterprises, the American producer of said comic book. This is possible because the Witchblade franchise has a long-established reputation for jumping forward and backward in time to show bearers of the Witchblade at various stages throughout history and the future, so fans of the original comic book are unlikely to bat an eye at the prospect of the series featuring a different wielder than long-time heroine Sara Pezzini or recent replacement Danielle Baptiste. Fans of the comic book are more likely to take issue with some of the stylistic changes done to convert the concept into a viable anime form, but at least the changes aren't as drastic as those seen in the unrelated Witchblade Takeru manga currently being released in the States.

This new incarnation differs from previous comic book and live-action versions in two key ways: the bearer has a child who figures prominently into the story from the very beginning, and the eroticism always implicit in the franchise has been ramped up to such explicit levels that the first volume carries a TV-MA rating. Witchblade has always featured big-breasted, hot-as-hell female action heroes striking sexy poses, but Gonzo's production goes two big steps further by making an already-skimpy set of Witchblade armor into something eye-poppingly revealing and turning the use of the Witchblade into a lustful, almost orgasmic experience; this goes well beyond just reveling in the power. It also seems as if Masane is more overwhelmed by the Witchblade than its normal comic book wielders, but her characterization to date has not painted her as a woman of great mental fortitude. (Of course, the comic book Witchblade has been established to have greater corrupting influence on those more pure of heart, so a comic book fan might take that as an indication of Masane's purity. But is Gonzo capable of being that subtle?)

But the real difference-maker so far in the series is Rihoko. Cynical anime fans may initially regard her as the requisite cutesy element, but it quickly becomes apparent that she has a far greater impact on the series than that. She provides the necessary external motivation for a heroine who lacks a purely internal drive and demonstrates character appealing enough to transcend her cuteness, but even more importantly she immediately generates a level of chemistry with Masane rarely seen in mother/daughter relationships in anime titles. How many viewers could watch the uncomfortable scene midway through episode 1 where Child Welfare must separate Masane and Rihoko without having a strong reaction to it, for instance? Her presence, and the part of the plotting which involves her exploits in trying to reunite with Masane, keeps the first few episodes from fully descending into a run-of-the-mill action story about a woman discovering special powers that put her in demand and place her in situations where she must battle monsters. A colorful cast of supporting characters also helps.

No discussion of the visuals can proceed without first addressing the outlandish Witchblade costume, which makes the heroine look like a cross between a Las Vegas showgirl and a punk rocker. The original Japanese TV broadcast edited the costume to make it less revealing, but the version provided for American home video is the same unedited version released to Japanese home video – i.e. only by the barest of margins does it cover enough to be semi-decent. One could get picky about the minor discrepancies compared to its comics book form, such as the addition of the tongue stud, dramatically altered hair and eyes, or how the get-up seems to replace Masane's clothes rather than overlap or rip them up, but the more significant differences are its functionality and overall look. The size-adjustable sword blade which projects from the Witchblade gauntlet is more reminiscent of the simplified blade used for the live-action TV series broadcast on TNT a few years ago than anything in the comic book, and the whiplike tentacles which shoot out from the Witchblade have a generic anime visual quality to them. These are, of course, adaptations to make the anime cost and time-effective, since the organic, spiky appearance of the original would require too much detail to be practical to animate, and the Witchblade does have a reputation for adjusting its appearance somewhat based on its wielder. Those wishing to see the Witchblade in full artistic splendor are encouraged to check out the American comic book version, however.

Otherwise the artistry represents a solid but not spectacular effort by Gonzo standards. It provides some nicely-detailed background shots as well as a wide array of interesting character designs that avoid being entirely stereotypical. Rihoko has an undeniable visual appeal for as serious as her demeanor normally is, and some of the supporting characters actually have decidedly unglamorous but still well-designed looks. The only place where the designs fail is in the cheesy depiction of the two women first seen in “dress armor” at the end of episode 4. The foreground/background integration is not flawless and the renderings sometimes have the not-completely-refined look typical of second-tier Gonzo productions, but on the whole the series looks good. The animation has yet to do anything complex or dramatic but offers surprisingly few shortcuts in what it does do. Gonzo also provides a healthy dose of graphic violence and blood to go with the inherently fan service-y battle costumes. Curiously, both the opening and closing visuals show a higher caliber of effort than the episode content.

Despite some of its artistic shortcomings, Wolf God is still a predominantly visual book which works both for and against its favour depending on how much you like that particular facet. The story itself at least sports some interesting elements and is generally easy to follow - excluding perhaps a cast far too laden with similar names (Kokuyou, Kyounosuke , Koyuki, Kanosuke, etc.). Unfortunately this first volume still falls short of being much past mildly-entertaining, especially when things start looking too familiar – Koyuki is kidnapped and Kyounosuke is now enrolled in her school, you say? In combination the story and art may be enough to give Wolf God a fighting chance but it's not likely to leave many howling for volume two.

It's been a bit of a bumpy ride since the series deviated to concentrating heavily on the Hikaru-and-Tamaki-love-Haruhi-but-don't-know-it plot line. Both characters were so naïve towards their own selves that it was hard to relate. Frankly it still is. Can someone really be that unaware? In this volume the characters at least acknowledge how ridiculous it had become. Now that both Hikaru and Tamaki have realized their feelings, and Haruhi having done so herself a couple volumes back (to much amusement for readers even now), we're at the point in the romance-side of the Ouran story where we're waiting to see what comes of it. Tamaki and Hikaru have now started competing in earnest which works well to the story's advantage by feeling more akin to earlier, more comedic parts of the plot full of lighthearted rivalries. On the progression scale however, while things are becoming more transparent to all parties involved, it still feels like we've reached a distinct stalemate.

The artwork is a consistent treat of the series however and its progress has never given reason for doubt since the beginning, coming a long way since volume one. It maintains the same fly-off-the-page energy and fine-tuned dramatics for every imaginable scenario while also becoming more polished and consistent with each book.

Certain pages are still a little overly cluttered but easily navigated despite the visual mish-mash. There remains no shortage of pretty boys, extravagant costumes and Haruhi's believably androgynous appearance (considering the company she keeps).

At this point in the story the twins, Hikaru and Kaoru, also have two different hair colours in their resolve to be more distinct from one another which suits their evolving differences, though that doesn't stop them from having another game of Guess Who Is Hikaru. All other characters stand out on their own with unique appearances and vibrant personalities that always makes it easy to tell them apart.

It's a real testament to Bisco Hatori's skill and practice with this series that she's able to keep such a large multi-character cast not only easy to follow but all distinct and memorable.

Anyone remember the 2003 NBA All-Star Game? The one where Michael Jordan, all of 40 years old, suited up for one last hurrah with a new generation of superstars on the floor? The Trigun movie is like that, a final send-off for a franchise that has become rose-colored and nostalgic with the passage of time. It is by no means a daring artistic statement, or even a revisionist take on the storyline; it is simply an extended episode that will warm the hearts of fans who got into the original all those years ago. Vash's coat is as red as ever, Wolfwood's cross is still a remarkable weapon, and yes, the feel of the sci-fi Wild West still resonates in every scene. It may not be some kind of masterpiece, but as an outlaw's last stand, it'll do.

Those who know how Trigun works will already know the plot of the movie. Influenced more by the TV series' sprightly first half than by the later episodes, the story is basically one long cops-and-robbers game—or rather outlaws-and-robbers—as Vash and company ride around and shoot things until the bad guy is disposed of. Various attempts to complicate the plot, such as a troubled mother-father-daughter relationship and twenty-year-long grudges, serve more to pad the length of the movie than to really contribute anything new to the franchise. In true Hollywood fashion, there are guns (and other weapons) laid out in Act 1 that get fired in Act 3, and every plot point is more or less tied up or wiped clean, in order to accomplish a proper heroic ending. Although it ultimately relies on a familiar formula, at least the formula is executed without any major screw-ups.

Then again, it's not like anyone was going to watch this for a coherent or clever plot, right? It's all about going on one last ride with the characters, and this movie takes great care to bring out their personalities just as viewers remember—Vash's eccentric mix of happy-go-lucky cheer and gunslinging precision, Wolfwood's impeccable sense of cool (plus a momentary lapse of conscience), and the snarling braggadocio of a villain like Gasback. Even our two favorite insurance agents on the planet, Meryl and Millie, are here to add comic relief, and one-time character Amelia adds a dose of mysterious charm (while also turning out to be a key player in the story). As the action grows more intense in the latter half, it becomes clear that resolving the plot is only of secondary importance to the true goal: seeing Vash and friends kick as much butt as possible.

A feature-film budget and attention to visual detail are what allow this butt-kicking to take place, with the number of explosions going up exponentially as the movie reaches its climactic showdown between Vash and Gasback. The animated sloppiness that one may remember from the TV series is nowhere to be found in this feature; instead, it's smooth moves and rapid-fire gunfights (and one remarkable saloon brawl) all the way through. The character designs and overall style, however, remain a throwback to the franchise's turn-of-the-millennium origins—no cute-and-cuddly moe-fication, no fancy 3-D CGI, just a good old adventure anime with all the dust and grit that comes from animating things with the sweat of one's brow. Not that these have any negative effect on some of the eye-popping props and backgrounds in the film: one can still marvel at the giant power generator, the mayor's statue, and the carefully textured desert that forms the venue for the final showdown. The style may look antiquated to some, but for a certain generation, it instantly recalls golden age of space-Western anime.

Even the background music stays true to form, with its blues/rock edge adding a sonic dimension to the rocky landscape. Naturally, electric guitars are turned all the way up when Vash is out there manhandling goons or firing bullets into impossible places, but the softer side of the soundtrack has its moments too, like a gentle acoustic twang during contemplative nighttime scenes. The voice acting is consistent as well, with much of the original anime cast reprising their roles. Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that the movie really does feel like an elaborate high-budget extension of the series.

As a spinoff product, Trigun: Badlands Rumble is exactly the kind of experience that Trigun fans have been waiting for. This is for the folks whose DVDs have started to go bad from repeated watchings, whose copies of the Trigun manga sit on the most prominent shelf in the house, whose 1/6-scale Vash figure is kept in a dust-proof, double-locked Plexiglas case with laser sensors around it. Everyone else, however, may want to save it for a lazy afternoon when some light popcorn entertainment is all that's needed, because the intellectual and artistic merits of this movie are average at best. It's simply a piece of well-executed fanservice, and by keeping the same animation style, the same story format, and even the same actors, it succeeds on that front. Ultimately, Vash and his buddies got exactly what they wanted: one last, rip-roaring ride into the sunset.

Nodame, Conan, Gintama, Shin-chan stay in top 10; Solanin leaves chart

Nodame Cantabile Saishū Gakushō Kō-hen (Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score Part II), the second film in the two-part theatrical finale inspired by Tomoko Ninomiya's Nodame Cantabile musical romance manga, stayed at #3 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's box office chart during the May 8-9 weekend, the film's fourth weekend in theaters. The film garnered US$1,591,193 on 410 screens for a total-to-date of US$30,361,196.

Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in The Sky, the 14th film in the Detective Conan franchise, fell from #2 to #4 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's box office chart during its fourth weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned US$1,406,864 on 352 screens for a four-week total of US$28,346,330.

Gintama: Shinyaku Benizakura-Hen (Gintama: Benizakura Arc — A New Retelling), the first film adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama alternate-history gag manga, stayed at #6 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart during its third weekend. It picked up US$682,155 on 90 screens, for a three-week total of US$8,197,996.

Crayon Shin-chan: Chō Jikū! Arashi o Yobu Ora no Hanayome, the 18th film in the Crayon Shin-chan anime franchise, fell from #5 to #7 during its fourth weekend. The film earned US$556,411 on 311 screens for a four-week total of US$11,805,753.

My Darling is a Foreigner, the live-action film adaptation of Saori Oguri's 2002 autobiographical Darling wa Gaikokujin essay manga, dropped from #11 to #13 on Box Office Mojo's chart during its fifth weekend. The film added US$183,410 on 250 screens for a total-to-date of US$6,615,141.

The live-action film adaptation of Inio Asano's acclaimed Solanin romance manga, left Box Office Mojo's chart after five weekends.

The Anime Network video-on-demand service has posted a list of episodes that it began streaming during the week of May 10 on its website, including a new series, Neo Angelique Abyss:

The North American anime distributor Funimation revealed on its blog that Initial D: Third Stage and Initial D: Fourth Stage are now available on the PLAYSTATION Network Store, Xbox Live, Microsoft Zune, and Amazon Unbox. The first season of Crayon Shin-chan is also now available on the PLAYSTATION Network Store, and Strike Witches is now available on Xbox Live and the Microsoft Zune. Funimation mentioned that new series are now available on iTunes in the U.S., iTunes in Canada, and Amazon Unbox.

The first episode of the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OAV is now available for rent on the PLAYSTATION Network Store. The SD version is available for US$3.99 and the HD version is available for US$5.99.

The Crunchyroll media-distribution website revealed that it has released an alpha version of its iPhone/iPod Touch application for Apple's iPad mobile device. The app is free to download, and premium members can use it to view simulcasts and all other videos without ads, just as they can from the website. The application only streams videos in standard definition for now, and only via a Wi-Fi connection. However, the company is currently working on making high-definition videos available for premium members, and is also working on getting the streaming feature to work on a mobile 3G connection.

As previously reported, the North American anime and manga distributor Media Blasters has started a streaming service on its website. Currently, the first dubbed episodes of Queen's Blade, Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny, and Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox are streaming on the site in "DVD quality" and without commercials. Media Blasters also announced it will stream Magic Knight Rayearth in the near future.

The other advantage of Hasekura's style is that it adapts very easily to anime form. As a result, the first six episodes of the anime version very faithfully replicate the novel, down even to exactly duplicating lines of dialog in most places. In fact, the only substantive change in the anime version is the introduction of the character Cloe, who assumes and expands slightly upon the role of Yarei, Pasloe's wheat trader. In some senses this is an improvement, as the book never did establish a strong enough connection between Lawrence and the village of Pasloe to be satisfying in certain late scenes, although her presence leaves Lawrence seeming less isolated in the anime than he is in the novel. Beyond that, the differences are mostly just points of emphasis. The anime is better able to use Holo's body language to portray her personality, while the novel stresses the loneliness aspect, and how much Lawrence cherishes Holo, a bit more. The anime offers a more convincing conflict of interest for Lawrence in one late scene, while the novel is more effective at portraying the overwhelming nature of Holo's wolf form.

Summary

Spice and Wolf vol. 1 (novel)
Yes, the events in the story provide the framework, but the relationship which gradually forms here between the mercurial Holo and the more steadfast Lawrence is the novel's greatest strength. The byplay between them is clever and dynamic, constantly adjusting to circumstances and never losing its edge as Lawrence struggles to keep up with Holo in a playful battle of wits. Because of that, we get to follow along as Lawrence gradually realizes that Holo is far from the burden she initially seems to be; she does, in fact, become very important to him because she fills the big hole in his lonely life as a peddler: his lack of companionship. Although the story is told entirely from Lawrence's point of view, Holo's words and deeds also make it clear that the ache of loneliness a mortal could only barely comprehend underlies her words and deeds, so in a way Lawrence is just as valuable a find for her, too. Given where Hasekura shows both characters coming from, it is not at all hard to understand how they become so close and why Lawrence ultimately chooses Holo even over profit and his own safety.

In his Afterword, author Isuna Hasekura talks about aspiring to make a fortune from winning literary awards, and based on the writing seen here, it is obvious why he won one for this effort. His style is smooth and easy to read without coming up short on substance. He never gets bogged down in descriptiveness but still has a sufficient amount of it and never forgets that, in this story, the characters and their interactions matter far more than the events being portrayed; in that sense, his work stands in starkest possible contrast to Hideyuki Kikuchi's Vampire Hunter D novels.

Yamada's historical manga Hyouge Mono had been nominated twice — once three years ago and again this year — before winning. Artist Mari Yamazaki already received this year's Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) for Thermae Romae, a gag manga that deals with the two cultures in the world "that have loved baths the most: the Japanese and the Romans!" Yonezawa passed away in 2006 after co-founding the largest dōjinshi market event in the world, writing a string of award-winning essays about manga's place in popular culture, and visiting North America for several anime conventions.

The Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes commemorate the contributions of the manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy/Mighty Atom, Kimba the White Lion/Jungle Emperor, Phoenix, Black Jack) by recognizing the manga that best follow his tradition. This year's nominating committee — which includes manga creator Go Nagai, manga creator Keiko Takemiya, novelist Shion Miura, essayists, and university professors — selected from among the works that were published from January to December of 2009. The newspaper awards a 2-million-yen (about US$20,000) Manga Grand Prize to each of its winners. In addition, 1 million yen (US$10,000) goes to each of the winners of the New Artist Prize, Short Work Prize, and the Special Prize every year. The actual awards presentation ceremony will take place in Tokyo on May 28.

Sazae-san Manga Gets 2nd New Live-Action TV Special

Alisa Mizuki to reprise housewife role from Machiko Hasegawa's manga

33-year-old actress Alisa Mizuki is reprising the title housewife role in a second live-action television special based on Machiko Hasegawa's Sazae-san manga this summer. Mizuki's first Sazae-san television special aired last November. Michitaka Tsutsui (Sazae-san's husband Masuo), Tsurutarō Kataoka (Sazae-san's father Namihei), and Keiko Takeshita (Sazae-san's mother Fune) are also reprising their respective roles in the new special.

In the second special, the Isasaka family from the original manga moves next door. Kōki Mitani, Keiko Toda, and Kana Kurashina will play the Isasaka family's novelist husband Nanbutsu, wife Karu, and daughter Ukie, respectively.

Mizuki is actually the fifth actress to portray Sazae-san in live-action, and the fourth to do so on television. Tonko Azumaya starred in a 1948-1950 series of live-action movies which predated the the more well-known anime by two decades. Chiemi Eri starred in a 1956 live-action film adaptation, as well as in a live-action television version that ran from 1965 to 1967 on TBS. Tomoko Hoshino played Sazae-san in yet another live-action television version on Fuji TV from 1981 to 1985. The last live-action version was Atsuko Asano's 1992-1996 incarnation on Fuji TV.

Anime Expo Hosts Gurren Lagann Voice Katsuyuki Konishi

Konishi to host 1st Gurren Lagann film's screening, Kamina cosplay contest

Aniplex of America has announced at its panel at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) on Sunday that Anime Expo will host voice actor Katsuyuki Konishi, the voice of Kamina in Gurren Lagann, at the July 1-4 event in Los Angeles.

Anime Expo and Aniplex will also host a screening of the first Gurren Lagann movie, Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood's End-. At the screening, Konishi will judge a Kamina cosplay contest, and Aniplex will give prizes to the winners. Prizes for the contest will be announced later. Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood's End- is slated to be released in North America on DVD on July 1, and Aniplex will be selling the DVD at Anime Expo.

Meisai wields Tsurugi, a thousand exact copies of one sword of Shikizaki's doing. Meisai claims her real name was long forgotten and that her current name was taken from a priest she had killed. She was the daughter of a powerful kendo master, but died along with all his followers. As a result she later became a bandit leader, inheriting Tsurugi through them. Her swordsmanship is 'Sentouryuu'.

Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gianfranco Ferré and Versace are only some of the top names reaching out to their masculine lines by including eastern elements to their lines, like pants made with kimono fabrics, mao necklines, printed belts and even oriental type sandals with the use of silk and heavy silk, these fabrics are the foundation for the exotic oriental look designers are striving for.

This twelve-episode anime is easy to follow. Each episode focuses on each sword: the role it plays and its owner's related history. And of course, there is always an action-packed scene at the end of each episode where the protagonists ultimately claim the sword, supplemented with bits of humor and romance here and there. If I were to point out one thing I dislike about this anime, it's the excessive and unnecessary dialogue. (Most of the dialogue itself, however, is well thought out, smart, and intellectual.) The introduction to everything new in each episode is certainly a must, but seriously, I always ask myself as the episode comes near to its end, "When will there be action?" I mean, "Come on! This is a freakin' SWORD story for crying out loud." I just hope that more action scenes could be added to compensate for some parts where dialogue is not needed, not to mention that I am obsessed with action genre animes. Credit-KyleK

Yesterday, I went to Toyohashi School for the Deaf.

Now, in a normal Japanese highschool, kids come to school at 8 o clock in the morning, are force fed textbooks until about 3-3:30, and go home. Toyohashi School for the Deaf, however, is very different. The day started out with us learning how to sing a famous SMAP song (sign language). Oh how I longed for my camera then, but I didn't bring it with me to the music room.... shitty.

Up next on the itinerary was 2 and a half hours of cooking. Some of you may be familiar with kyushoku (the lunch provided at Japanese elementary school) but what we made blew fß right out of the water. First, we separated into 4 groups, one for Gyoza, Tempura, Sushi, and Kimuchi Nabe (respectively).

I was assigned to the Kimuchi Nabe group, it took us about an hour to get everything ready, and then another hour to eat and talk about stuff. And yes, I do mean talk, even though all of the kids were either deaf or hearing-impaired, I think I talked to them more than I've ever talked to anyone at my real school. I accomplished this through learning some Kq, (like Love, Flower, and Delicious!) writing down what I wanted to say, or just speaking clearly and slowly. (cause they were able to read my lips, how cool is that?) It was probably the most delicious lunch I've ever had at school, not just because of the food, but because for the first time since I came to Japan, I didn't feel like a foreign kid talking with Japanese kids, I just felt like a kid talking to other kids. It was really amazing how they accepted me into their group, I'd never experienced anything like that ever before.

After lunch, we proceeded to play basketball (which I suck at) but it was quite a lot of fun. Naturally, even though I can dunk, I got my ass kicked, and my team lost every time I think. I played in shoes that were 2 sizes too small, but it was REALLY fun anyway, albeit embarrassing :(.

As the day wound down, everyone gradually got sadder and sadder, even though we'd only met just that morning, it felt like we made a real connection, (yeah, I know thats a cliche way to put it, shut up) and I absolutely did not want to leave.

At the end of the day, we took the customary pictures with peace signs all over the place, and I, naturally, being the idiot that I am, stuck my hand right in front of Ken's face.

This post is dedicated to my dear friends at Toyohashi School for the Deaf, I hope we meet again.

I have lived in Japan for a total of about 5 years of my life, living in four different cities throughout Japan during that time. Now that I live back in my native country, I must say that one of the things I miss most about being in Japan are my trips to onsen, or natural Japanese hot springs. Visiting a Japanese onsen can be one life’s more memorable experiences.

Like many non-Japanese people, when I think of the term hot spring, I imagine a rocky landscape pocketed with natural pools of steamy, mineral-rich water. Often, the image of a spa with natural mud baths also comes to mind. This is really nothing like the experience of a Japanese onsen, however.

Japanese onsen are typically accessed as part of an entire resort experience. Some are small, family-run affairs with only a few rooms, while others are large, modern hotels complete with restaurants and even a gift shop.

Upon check-in, you immediately change into your yukata, or traditional Japanese robe made of thin, loose-fitting material and held together at the front with a loose belt called an obi. From this moment forward, your consciousness begins to shift away from the business of daily life and you begin to fall under the charm of the onsen experience.

After getting dressed in your yukata, pay a visit to the mineral baths before dinner. The bathing areas for men and women are separated (in almost all cases). Upon entering your designated area, you leave your yukata in a basket and step into the main indoor bath area for a quick shower. Next, you will usually have the choice of an inside bath (notenburo) or outside bath (rotenburo). The serenity you can attain by sitting in a rotenburo in the middle of winter, gazing through a curtain of steam emanating from the hot mineral water at nature around you is quite amazing.

Usually, dinner consists of traditional foods. Sometimes onsen food is served privately in your room, while at other times you enjoy it in the hotel restaurant. Either way, you are encouraged to wear your yukata anywhere inside the hotel, thereby preserving that other-worldly frame of mind.

After dinner, I advise going for one more dip in the baths. Then, it may be off to get a foot massage or just quiet time with family, friends, or a good book. Once it is time for bed, you will likely be out like a light. The warm mineral water does something to you that is hard to explain, but it puts many visitors into a completely relaxed state for hours after a soak. No wonder millions of Japanese businesspeople, families, and other groups visit Japanese onsen every year.

To appreciate the full onsen experience, plan to stay at least one night - two or more if you can. I guarantee that by the time you take your second or third soak, you will be hooked.

A living being with storge feels a strong sense of duty and is often willing to die to protect this love. Storge is a conditional love that says: "I love you because I should." The strength and devotion of storge is often proportional to the need of the loved one and may be thwarted by influences such as ambition, selfishness, or religious conviction.

3. Physical attraction, called eros by the ancient Greeks, is the chemical reaction, the sex urge, the infatuation between two people. "Notwithstanding the personality gulf between men and women, the sex urge is sufficient to insure their coming together for the reproduction of the species. This instinct operated effectively long before humans experienced much of what was later called love, devotion, and marital loyalty." Eros is often mistaken for love and therefore easily abused. Jingoji Temple is located at the top of a very long set of stone stairs. Though it makes for an impressive approach, it may also be too difficult a walk for some. At the temple there are numerous buildings and a path that leads to an impressive vista over the valley. Small clay discs with inscriptions on them can be purchased to throw into the valley for good luck.

Saimyoji Temple was originally built as a detached temple of Jingoji. It is not as big or impressive as Jingoji, but still pleasant. The vermilion covered Shigetsukyo Bridge, which leads over a river to the temple entrance, is thought of as particularly beautiful.

Another famous temple in Ohara is Jakko-in. The temple was destroyed in an arson attack in the year 2000, but reconstruction works on the temple have been completed in 2005. It is said that the temple was founded by Shotoku Taishi in the seventh century.

Since 2004, Ohara has its own hot spring water, pumped to the surface from a depth of more than one kilometer. The water can be enjoyed at two local ryokan, Ohara no Sato and Ohara Sanso, not far from Jakko-in. Nijo Castle (Nijojo) was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo Shogunate, as the Kyoto residence for himself and his successors.

The palace building, now known as Ninomaru ("secondary castle"), was completed in 1603 and enlarged by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu. It survives in its original form and is famous for its Momoyama architecture, decorated sliding doors and floors that squeak like nightingales when someone walks on them (a security measure against intruders).

Iemitsu also added the Honmaru ("main castle") including a five storied castle tower to Nijo Castle. However, the original honmaru structures were destroyed by fires in the 18th century, and the present building was moved there from the Imperial Palace in 1893.

In a quiet moment, a thought rushes through the mind and a familiar emotion reveals itself again. Smile, laugh, and delight in the joy you find in your own life. It is no surprise to find out that people who are genuinely happy with their life are more attractive than those who are not.

Understanding who you are and what you want, are vital aspects to comprehend before entering a relationship. While leaving out the trivial things about someone, it is healthier to look at what kind of partner you would like. Focusing on someone's character, personality, and values are more consequential than looking at the type of car they drive or how they dress. The goal of the relationship is also an important factor. Are you looking for a boyfriend/girlfriend or do you want to be married with kids? Putting some serious time into self-reflection about your needs may uncover irrational tendencies which can lead to an improved end result.

When people open their hearts and minds to the spiritual realm, wonderful things can begin to happen. In a state of openness, one can receive messages in many forms including signs. Considered a sacred mountain, Takaosan has been a center of mountain worship for more than 1000 years. The attractive temple Yakuoin stands near the mountain's top. Visitors pray there to Shinto-Buddhist mountain gods (tengu) for good fortune. The White Fox studio anime on Thursday posted a notice on its website regarding the leak of materials production Katanagatari the anime series. According to study leader Gaku Iwasa, Study FTP (file transfer protocol) server was hacked by a third, and the production of materials were leaked early on Monday - three weeks before January 25 of the anime release.

The study apologized to the companies involved in production and viewers away from the problems caused by the incident. The study also apologized for the difficulty it is having on the individual response to emails received by many the incident through its homepage. Katanagatari specials one-hour

The commercials and the website confirm that the anime will air as 12 monthly one-hour specials — one for each novel volume — starting in January.

The 12-volume novel centers on Shichika Yasuri, the seventh generational head of the Kyotō-ryū school of martial arts in medieval Japan. He and his older sister Nanami live on an isolated island, until a military advisor named Togame tells him of the final 12 swords forged by a legendary swordsmith. At Togame's bidding, Shichika embarks on a journey to find all 12 of the swords.

This anime will be the second one based on a NisiOisin work after Bakemonogatari.
